Its common name 'Star Sedge' comes from the star-shaped pattern of the spreading perigynia (seed casings) when viewed from above.
As a cool-season species, it actively grows during spring and fall but essentially takes the summer off when temperatures rise.
Starting Eastern Star Sedge from seed can be tricky and slow — plant divisions are the recommended way to propagate this species.
