Flat-topped Aster is one of the first asters to bloom, starting in July — weeks before most other aster species even begin.

Its flower clusters can spread nearly a foot wide, creating a landing platform that attracts an incredible diversity of pollinators including bees, wasps, flies, beetles, and butterflies.

The flat-topped inflorescence is so distinctively shaped that it inspired the former genus name Aster umbellatus — 'umbrella-like aster.'
