After its long blooming season, the flowers give way to showy purplish-red or maroon seed capsules that add fall color.
Its rhizomatous root system allows it to spread and stabilize wet, sandy soils along pond edges and stream banks.
Like other St. John's Worts, the leaves contain tiny translucent dots visible when held up to light — these are oil glands containing hypericin.
