Crested Oval Sedge can be distinguished from look-alikes by the perfectly globe-shaped spikelets that look like tiny spiky balls.
As a cool-season species, it does most of its growing during the spring and fall when soil temperatures drop, essentially resting during summer heat.
It spreads by short rhizomes and provides cover and food for insects and birds while being mostly ignored by grazing mammals.
