Indian Grass was named the state grass of Oklahoma and is one of the 'Big Four' grasses that dominated the tallgrass prairie.
The golden plumes with dangling yellow anthers against blue-green stems create one of the most beautiful displays of any native grass.
It is a host plant for several skipper butterfly caterpillars, including the Pepper-and-Salt Skipper and Indian Skipper.
