Why
Wild Ones Capital Region holds a native plant sale every year. The sign in each pot tells you what the plant needs, what it feeds and whether it suits your garden; the page behind its QR code tells you the rest.
What I made
- Printed signs: 4×6 inches, with a photo, growing conditions, a few badges (such as “pollinator plant” or “deer resistant”) and a QR code.
- A phone page for every plant: flip the card for planting notes, fun facts and the wildlife it supports; search and filter all plants; save favourites to “My Plants”; detail photos from iNaturalist; planting tips for the current month.
- Browse-by-purpose guides: rain garden, shade, deer resistant, drought tolerant, pollinator plants, caterpillar host plants and bloom season.
How
Everything comes from one data file. For each new plant, a script fetches the species and its photos from iNaturalist; AI fills in growing conditions for the Capital Region, badges, fun facts, companion plants and planting steps; then one build makes the phone page, the printed sign and the print-ready image. Badges come from a fixed vocabulary, so all 151 signs read as one set.
Result
- February 2026: the first sign, with its QR code.
- April: final edits after review, sent to print.
- May: the plant sale. The site’s plant list showed only the 81 species on sale.
- August: all 151 species opened on the site, with the browse-by-purpose guides.
